Resolving Regrets

Today in Elders' Quorum we had a lesson based off of Elder Uchtdorf's talk from the October General Conference. It is a talk I've listened to a few times since hearing it in conference and it amazes me that, just like scripture, each time we listen to or read those talks from the leaders of the church, we change. And I mean that in the way that we gain more from them, even different things, because we change. We go through different things over time and the Lord knows this. Which is why we are encouraged to always be studying the scriptures. We should be reading the scriptures daily- not because they change, but because every day, we change.

This talk is such a great insight to how we often get stuck in life. We may easily find that we get stuck in a rut. We feel regret for not just the past but in the present. We want to be further along and further ahead. Perhaps the success of those who once were in the same place in life is almost torture for us to see. I understand that and feel it regularly. But we need to follow the counsel of the prophet in taking a more realistic look at our lives. Understand that we are, where we are. You are only going to change that by what you do today- not what you didn't do yesterday. Stop focusing on your faults, failures and regrets and choose to be happy. Choose to live your days.. like today, in the best way possible.

Those ways that are best for us to live will change and vary through time and the course of life but Elder Uchtdorf speaks of three most common regrets of those who are on their death beds. As he speaks of in his talk- there is a nurse who makes a point to ask her patients what they regret most and what they would change. I'll leave you to look over these highlights from the talk and review it yourself. I like to watch them so I can see as well as hear.

~Spend more time with those we love.
~Strive more earnestly to become the person God wants us to be.
~Find happiness, regardless of our circumstances.

Announcing that we will dedicate more time for family prayer, scripture study, and wholesome family activities is good; but actually doing all these things steadily will bring heavenly blessings to our lives.

So often we get caught up in the illusion that there is something just beyond our reach that would bring us happiness: a better family situation, a better financial situation, or the end of a challenging trial. (I've talked about this before- and I will again soon)

What we need to do is find a way to be happy with where we are now and stop holding out for the future. We are meant to be happy, to have joy, and to share that with those around us. So lets focus on that and stop letting our faults hold us back. This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes.

"it's hard to beat a person who never gives up" Babe Ruth

The older we get, the more we look back and realize that external circumstances don’t really matter or determine our happiness.
We do matter. We determine our happiness.
You and I are ultimately in charge of our own happiness.
Sometimes in life we become so focused on the finish line that we fail to find joy in the journey.

We shouldn’t wait to be happy until we reach some future point, only to discover that happiness was already available—all the time! Life is not meant to be appreciated only in retrospect. “This is the day which the Lord hath made … ,” the Psalmist wrote. “Rejoice and be glad in it.”
His Atonement allows us to leave the past behind and move forward with clean hands, a pure heart, and a determination to do better and especially to become better.

So let us put this into practice and apply His atonement to our lives. Take courage for we are in control of our destiny. We choose what attitude we look at life with and where ours is heading. As I've said before...  "Have faith. Trust yourself and trust in God. And if you start to feel overwhelmed... just focus on baby steps. One week at a time, one day at a time,  one task to do and you will do it. Maybe not the first time and definitely not every time. But we don't practice because we're the best at something: we practice because as we fail and push on... we change. And that change makes all the difference." Steven Hatch

Imaginary fences

There's something that's been on my mind a lot the last month. I've had situations where I've needed to consider these things for myself and even recently I've been learning more in relation to this. Please take these things in, and choose for yourself what you think and how you feel about this. That is what I've done over the last six years, and now completely know where I stand on this issue, and subsequently, many other seemingly grey areas of life. But if the spirit doesn't teach it to you, then you won't have the power to really apply it in your life... so again, Listen. Open your heart and humbly consider the principle I'm speaking of. Not of all the "proofs" in whatever your situation may be- that seem to be proof of how I could be wrong.

I feel like much of the Saviors' energy as portrayed in the new testament is not about the law, but what lies just beneath it. There seems to be something else holding up the commandments Jehovah had given in the old testament times. As Christ fulfills the law and brings more truth I think what he's getting at is that there are not just simple rules we can follow to gain favor in His eye- but there is a higher law. Or, a better place that we can be in- even more so than by simply following the guidelines given us. Here's an example;

Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery. But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matt 5:27-28
The power of this is not in following the law given, the real salvation comes from not just living by the law... but by not even having those thoughts in our hearts. Notice the phrase "in his heart". How many times do we go through the day getting down on ourselves because we had a bad thought go through our head. How absurd is that- really? We are divinely created, we are on God's side and we are not the ones coming up with those thoughts that oppose the Lord. It is the adversary. But our head and our hearts are two totally different things, are they not? Heavenly Father knows that our temptations first come into our mind, and that if we give place for them in our hearts those things can begin to take over and change the way we live our lives.

So let me ask you something... Where is the line? How do you know what is and isn't right? What if it's not so clear. What if that line is right through the middle of something you want but aren't sure if it's best for you- and, even if it isn't, maybe you just want it anyways. There was a time when I had this choice to make in regards to something some may see as being completely black and white. Others know the emotional side of it. The hurt and pain of constant loneliness as you go through a serious break up or in my case- divorce. Maybe you know what it's like to just want someone to make it better and have a reason to still believe you can be loved. Often though it's much more simple. Most of the time it comes down to deciding between what's good and what's best. The only problem is that we don't see what's best. We're too stuck on what we want... to see things as they really are, to see what's often right in front of us, and what we already know in our hearts is right.

So here's the situation. When I was going through my divorce, I had a choice as to how I was going to act while going through this time. I was well able to go about life with a new sense of freedom and start dating around and getting back to normal. However, there was something holding me back. Papers had been signed and it was only a matter of waiting six months for finalization- so what did I do? What would you do?
Do you choose Diligence or Denial? Does it really matter? Diligent to what- a failed marriage that you'll never go back to? Well let me tell you what I've learned.

What I felt, and what I knew, were different in many ways. What I felt was totally normal for someone in an abusive and dysfunctional relationship- hurt, lonely, like I needed to tell everyone that was close to me I loved them because my whole sense of security was dismantled. So coming out of it of course I wanted to move on. I wanted to start something new and put the past behind me. However, I was still "married" for another 8 months after we separated. So did I want to be diligent to those promises I had made to Heavenly Father? Of course I did, but I also wanted change. I wanted life to flow back through me. I thought that would come through someone else eventually... But it still hasn't. Not even six years later. Where it has come from was where it originated. My relationship with the Savior, and how I followed Him.

I had a choice in front of me, to look at the law, or to seek out the principle. Technically I was still married. But in all other senses I was not and would not be involved with that person ever again. We were over. Where I went right... was how I chose to move on. I knew I was married still until it was completely finalized. And I never went on a date or even held a girls hand until it was finalized. I think some may say that it wouldn't have mattered much, but the thing is... it mattered to me. And I knew it mattered to the Lord. How do we see these choices we're given. They really are our choices and we get to make all kinds of them every day. We cannot choose the consequences, but we usually know what they will be.

Where it all started for me was in the decision I made to honor the fact that I was still married. By living according to that and following what I knew was right I was able to receive so much more from Heavenly Father. I know that by being obedient to the Lord's commandments we not only are doing what is right, we are qualifying ourselves to be truly taught by the Holy Spirit. Through the hurt, by struggling at times and pushing through to what I knew was right- I gained so much. I grew. I gained knowledge and character, and I became a little more like my Father in Heaven.

I went off a little but I just want you to know I've been on both sides. I know there are some really great, and very convincing reasons to not see what others can see so clearly.  Stop letting the deceptions of the devil cloud your eyes, the pride and selfishness are hurting you more than you know. Stop trying so hard to defend yourself in doing what you want to at the time, that you start to believe they're actually your thoughts. Don't defend the adversary... choose your own thoughts. That is why it is so very important to be humble. We need a sense of our own nothingness to really be teachable. Humility brings faith, and faith helps hope. Use those gifts. They are traits that God has given all of us. We all have hope and faith and want to trust in something higher than us... so believe and have faith that you can see things as they really are. Then listen to what the spirit is telling you- and obey

Motivation

Success doesn't come to you... you go to it! Marva Collins

"it's hard to beat a person who never gives up" Babe Ruth

"Forget past mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you're going to do now and do it!" William Durant

To escape criticism- do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.
Elbert Hubbard

What can you find in knowledge?

Knowledge: --one of the attributes of God- He possesses all knowledge.
--knowledge of divine and spiritual things is essential for salvation- thus the gospel is taught to every soul.(not person… spiritual learning directly to your soul)
Knowledge is one of the endowments of the Holy Ghost (john 14:26)
--One of the gifts of the spirit  (2 Peter 1:3-9) -Peter also lists Faith, patience, kindness, and virtue as necessary.
-- True knowledge is only of true things. Truth is light, the more truth you have, the more light and knowledge you have and the more like our Father in Heaven you are.
--The fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association. (Webster’s Dictionary)
--acquainted with facts, truths, or principles. (Dictionary.reference.com)

Romans 10:14- “how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?” Isa 46:9-10 2 Nephi 9:20, John 13:16, 1 Cor 12:8, Acts 15:18

Acquisition;
Knowledge is not obtained all at once, but by revelation, line upon line. (Isa. 28:9-10)
Knowledge is acquired through faith and prayer.

I'll admit it... This was mostly for a school assignment. But I went way over and beyond because I knew it was something important enough to post here. And as I looked at the references to knowledge I saw at the bottom- another reference in Proverbs 1:22-33. I looked it up and have been reading through the chapter, specifically the last half as noted. And right away I notice the slight sarcasm used to humble and teach those that aren’t following the Lord.
The very first verse in 22 states;
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?... and fools hate knowledge?

I hear it talking about the ways of the world. How people think it’s not cool to be smart or go to school. Or how nice it is to not have to worry about responsibilities. Just relax and take a break because the simple easy life is where it’s at. These are not the ways of the Lord and this is not acceptable. As we get older we should naturally shift our way of thinking and how we see the world. We need learning. We need truth and knowledge and understanding. It makes everything so much better!

Often we may think it’s great to take things slow and easy, or not push ourselves. The adversary would have us be like this every day if he could. And our attitudes about living the gospel would quickly turn in the same direction. But we have to challenge ourselves!

If our character is not tested, if our will is not challenged, our desires, our faith, and our hopes and dreams not taken. How will we ever have the power to make them come true! SJH

We have to gain knowledge because in doing so we will be so much happier- and so much more like our Father in Heaven. The true religion of the Lord is change. Be open to it, be willing and wanting and waiting for it because when you know it’s happening it is the most joyous feeling there is. The most important change is in your mind, your heart, and your soul. Truth is taught by the spirit of God and you can sometimes feel it in your heart.
To know you pushed past one more challenge, one more struggle- that is what knowledge is all about. The desire to be better… to believe in yourself and the possibilities that await you. The power and ability that knowledge creates. When we have the future in mind, and an understanding of the reality that hard times await us- then we will not just make it though.

We won’t just endure or let hard times come… we will stand up and fight our way through. We will turn to the Lord and take the first step even when we can’t see where it’s leading. We can know that the path we choose is good and true, and that as needed, we will be directed onward and upward. I have seen this so many times in the last few months. I often am not sure how to get a project done or what my homework is trying to teach me. But I know that as I push through and give in to the change and seek out learning- things fall into place. What seems like a miracle beforehand, turns out to just be me getting over my fear, or doubt, or lack of understanding- and just doing what I wasn't sure I could do.
And with the bigger challenges in life, we need those smaller experiences to give us hope. To help us remember that when we just buckle down and do it- things are gonna be fine. Challenging... but they'll work out and you'll be better off for it.

Confidence through Failures

This last week has flown by. There have been some great things I've heard and read that I want to share. Through school assignments I get the chance to review some great business professionals' words of advice. I think it is wise to listen and learn from those successful people who have gone before us and are learning similar things we are or want to learn.
One part of my studies included watching clips from successful business persons. Here are two excerpts. These are in regards to brainstorming and being creative to work through problems.

"Often we're so fixated on what we want to do or what we think we know that we tune out the       noise around us. [All else is a distraction and we focus on what we know best.] But that noise contains great information. Be conscious of the ways that your focus can breed it's own myopia. Remember the "thought problem", not just the answer. You need to work in your working, finding, figuring stages because that is often where the most discovery comes from." Richard Pascale, Oxford University

"Diversity in experience breeds creativity"  Julia Cleverdon, Google.

Don't you do that too?!? Man there are a lot of times I am so fixated on what I want to happen, or the way I think things should happen, and it gets really boring waiting around for the world to work how I expect it to. Life is often predictable and about the same each week. But who says it has to be. We need to stop focusing on the result, on the end, on what we want... and figure out the why, how, and where to get it. The JOURNEY is why I am here, and I forget it every day. I rush through homework assignments every week to get them done because I want to do other things. But how are we supposed to learn anything if we can't pay attention to what we need to do- to get to where we want to go. We need to learn how to be comfortable with uncomfortable things. Then maybe we can learn from within our problems and issues. We have trials, we are challenged every day by the adversary and that is how it will always be. Every day we will be faced with something we don't want to do.

I spent four years of my life struggling back and fourth with school. I knew it was something I wanted to finish and accomplish but I was scared. I was scared to fail. I knew it was going to be hard and I tried so hard to go the easiest rout, and time kept dragging on and on and on. Thankfully, now, I have a year left and I will have my BA. But it was my fear of the challenge, my fear of the fight that kept me from just jumping in and pushing through it.

It is not arriving at our destination that proves success. It's the knowledge, the character, the faith, and the Trust in not just God, but in our selves that successfully empowers and improves us. SJH

There are some very important points I want to share which combine principles from last weeks post, what I've said thus far this week, and all of which is embodied in this talk. I'm referring to "Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence" a talk given by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, BYU devotional, 1999.
Please read this talk and think of the ways it applies to your lack of courage; increase of doubt, fear,  and procrastination; and the ability we all have to use the Saviors sacrifice to push through trials. Please think of how these things work together to effect positively and negatively our ability to grow. We are creatures of growth and change. We need that to feel happy and our Heavenly Father wants to help us increase in all aspects of our lives. I will leave you this week with that talk, and two quotes I found. Enjoy, take notes, and re-evaluate what the truth in the way you live your life is.

“Decisions are constantly before us. To make them wisely, courage is needed—the courage to say no, the courage to say yes. Decisions do determine destiny.”(Words of a Prophet) Thomas S. Monson, November, 2010.

"You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make." Gordon B. Hinckley

Loving faith

"Love is a fragile thing, and some elements in life can try to break it. Much damage can be done if we are not in tender hands, caring hands. To give ourselves totally to another person, as we do in marriage, is the most trusting step we take in any human relationship. It is a real act of faith—faith all of us must be willing to exercise. If we do it right, we end up sharing everything—all our hopes, all our fears, all our dreams, all our weaknesses, and all our joys—with another person.
No serious courtship or engagement or marriage is worth the name if we do not fully invest all that we have in it and in so doing trust ourselves totally to the one we love. You cannot succeed in love if you keep one foot out on the bank for safety's sake. The very nature of the endeavor requires that you hold on to each other as tightly as you can and jump in the pool together. "
~Jeffery R Holland

So I've spent a lot of time the last year or so thinking of the importance of commitment, of relationships,  and of being one with someone. What does it take, how do you know when to commit completely- even if it's just to date. What didn't I do right the first time, every time, and where do I go from here.
Well that's a lot of questions. Fortunately though, I know how to get the answers! It takes time and patience, give and take, and a lot of faith. But when we feel like we're trying to have faith in the Lord and his timing. When we're trying to decide what to do and when and with whom it's right to jump in with... I think our Heavenly Father is right there with us. Waiting to see what we decide. Waiting to see when we'll figure out that He's waiting on us- so why do we keep waiting on Him.
Well, going back to my first thought... we know in our hearts what is right. I feel like I spent so much time trying to figure out how and who and what to be that I almost forgot how simple it really is. I'm supposed to just be me. Because that's the person I'm best at being, and nobody else is gonna do it. And no one else can pull it off quite like I can :)
We have been born with the ability to reason things out. To find the faults in the reasonings of men and the adversarial influences that are all around us- even in the way we ourselves think. The father of lies is everywhere and in everything. So stop looking everywhere else for answers and focus on you, and the Lord. We all have the light of Christ in us to guide and direct us. The choices we choose need to be based off of those things the spirit confirms to us are good or best for whatever circumstance we may be in. Have faith in YOU and trust that you are all grown up, and you know what's right. Then choose to do it.
The love that Elder Holland speaks of can only be had with faith. Faith precedes the miracle- and the miracle we're talking about is mainly a solid, committed, growing relationship. But faith has so many more applications than just that. So go ahead and practice a little everywhere else just to make sure you get it down. Trust in yourself. Have faith in and trust in your Eternal Father in Heaven. He has known you the longest and knows you the best. And as His child... He not only wants it for you more than anything- but you deserve the best. And He has provided a way to have ultimate pure joy.
Don't be afraid to commit, be afraid not to. Because in not challenging yourself, in not committing, in keeping away from heartbreak and change, hurt and pain, you are totally trying to avoid the plan of salvation. You're trying to win the race when you haven't even trained for it.

Leadership training reflections

An assignment I had for an online class was to review the World Wide Leadership Training Meeting for the LDS church. I found that it was actually very interesting and of course the main focus was on strengthening the family. Elder Packer read the Proclamation and gave some feedback on it then there was a round table discussion by leaders of the church auxiliaries on the subject of strengthening the families. It is of such significance and importance that this is often the theme each year and should be given great attention to. The video and text files of this are online. It is over 60 minutes long. WWLT_2008_02_30__RoundtableDiscussion_00383_eng_vc1.wmv

Something I really got from the round table was right from the beginning. I liked what Elder Oaks (I think) said was about how we are mainly to do three things in life reguarding marriage.

Leave Parrents.   Cleave unto one another.   Become One.

To me this is such a simple task and I know if I focus on these simple principles it will be easier to fill in all the details along the way. As we look to eachother and gain a unity and committment to the Lord we will be strengthened individually as well as together with our spouse.
We need to LOOK first to one annother in our marriage. Confide in and communicate with one another about your thoughts and feelsings on all things first. It was stated that we would be blessed to get through our trials as we honor our covenants and cleave unto each other. This is important to me because I know that the first thing I do is pull away and think that I need alone time. It IS a good thing but we must soon after look to our spouse and the Lord to communicate our frustrations and concerns as well as our excitements and joys in life.
I am not yet married but it is very important to me and it was really nice to have these insighgts into making a marriage last through eternity and having that ability to then turn to your children and give them a happy healthy home to grow up in.
Children are really the reason we are here I've learned and I know that we have such a great responsibility to take care of and provide for them. As we secure a good foundation in our marriage we give our kids the added strength and momentum to push through the hard times in life and know they are always loved. I think it was the Primary president that said that the best way to get our needs met is to take care of someone else's.
That just seems so simple to me. It is a great way to look at it. And if that person is trying to be their best self and show you love and concern they also will make sure they are serving you and taking care of your needs in return. It's a great thing :)
